A special prize will be presented to the player who scored the most goals at Europe’s international soccer tournament this summer. The tournament’s sponsor, Russia’s Gazprom and European football’s governing body UEFA are behind the awarding of the trophy with an NFT trophy to the winner.
UEFA, Gazprom to Award Best Goal Prize at Euro 2020
The unique prize will be presented as part of a sponsorship deal with Gazprom and UEFA. This agreement was extended by Gazprom and UEFA for an additional three years. The agreement covers the Champions League, Europe’s most prestigious professional soccer tournament.
The non-fungible token (NFT) will represent an original artwork by a famous Russian artist that will be created at the fan zone in Saint Petersburg. Russia’s second-largest city will host seven of a total 51 matches at UEFA Euro 2020 to be played in a dozen different cities across Europe. The tournament was postponed last year due to the Covid-19 crisis but retained its original designation.
Although the organizers intend to throw away the artwork, a small piece will be kept by the organizers and presented to the winner for the “best goal” trophy. Gazprom stated that the artwork would be scanned into 3D animated video and used as the basis to create an NFT token. According to the company, the NFT will contain the tournament’s name, player names, and key values for the Football for Friendship program.
Winner to Be Awarded NFT Prize at UEFA Headquarters
Euro 2020 is scheduled to take place June 11 – July 11 this year with the participation of 24 national football teams. The games will be hosted by 11 cities in 11 UEFA countries to celebrate the 60th birthday of the pan-European soccer competition. The tournament will begin with Italy taking on Turkey at StadioOlimpico in Rome. The final will be held at the legendary Wembley Stadium, London.
The winner of the NFT Trophy will be invited to collect the digital prize at UEFA headquarters, Switzerland, after the tournament. The first time UEFA has awarded the prize for the best goal scored in the championship, so the organization is still deciding what criteria to use to assess the contenders. Gazprom has revealed that the trophy will be presented using a hardware cryptocurrency wallet.
UEFA and Gazprom extended their partnership to include the Euro 2024 competition. The agreement also covers the UEFA Champions League where the European football governing body cooperates with the Russian energy monopolist since 2012. Gazprom has the sponsorship rights for the UEFA Super Cup and the UEFA Champions League futsal finals. Gazprom also holds the rights to the UEFA Youth League finals.
