OpenSea offers an app but you cannot buy NFTs there

.

OpenSea is one of the most well-known NFT marketplaces and has launched its first app for iOS and Android. The app allows OpenSea users to view the platform’s collection of digital items, but notably doesn’t allow for any kind of money to change hands, digital or otherwise (via TechCrunch).

The OpenSea app is a gallery. The app allows you to browse artwork and share listings. You can also lovely ogle your NFTs and manage them. The app shares many of the same blue-white stylings as the OpenSea website, but it does not have the button that says “Buy now

“. There are two possible reasons for actual NFT purchases being missing. At the most obvious, highest level, OpenSea probably doesn’t want to share a 30 percent cut of NFT transactions with the likes of Apple and Google. This doesn’t benefit the people who sell the work and it doesn’t help OpenSea.

Another problem is that OpenSea’s payment methods are often in Ethereum. This currency is not supported on any platform as an in-app payments method.

While the OpenSea app is a step towards the company’s goal to “make NFTs more accessible to all,” it doesn’t have the economic component. This will be sold to struggling artists, speculated upon and speculated on by hungry investors. However, it will first and foremost provide another way to view nice JPEGs. The company is also launching the app at a difficult time. OpenSea head of product Nate Chastain made a high-profile exit from the company last week following accusations of insider NFT trading.
