Mark Karpeles, former Exchange CEO, reveals plans to airdrop NFTs on Mt Gox customers

Former Exchange CEO Mark Karpeles Reveals Plans to Airdrop NFTs to Mt Gox Customers

The former CEO of the bankrupt bitcoin exchange Mt Gox, Mark Karpeles, announced he has launched a non-fungible token (NFT) project that will give Mt Gox customers registered between 2010 and 2014 an airdropped NFT. The Mt Gox NFTs are ERC721-compatible tokens that claim to provide “specific use cases.”

Exchange CEO Announces Commemorative Mount Gox NFTs

Mark Karpeles has announced that he will be back in the crypto world, launching an NFT collection linked to the Mt Gox bankruptcy. “You can claim your Mt Gox NFT on [mtgoxnft.net] if you were a Mt Gox customer between 2010 and 2014. The NFT is airdropped for free, and available no matter if you had a balance or filed a claim with the bankruptcy,” Karpeles tweeted on March 28.

Karpeles explained that the NFTs don’t feature artwork, and also said the project would “not be using ethereum, because of the fees” and he mentioned that Polygon “looks like a much better choice at this point.” The Mt Gox NFTs also have a website that explains that each NFT is numbered (uint256), and they match each Mt Gox customer account number. This website explains how each NFT owner can use the NFTs to access a members-only area, future Airdrops, and a DAO governance structure.

“Ownership of a Mt Gox token is proof that someone was an early adopter of bitcoin,” the website details. [its] is also evidence of having survived and been through one of the most widely covered bitcoin-related catastrophes. A Mt Gox NFT is proof that you are an OG. You were there in the early days of Bitcoin, and now you can prove it on the blockchain.”

On March 28, Karpeles updated the community about his NFT project. The former CEO of the defunct bitcoin exchange stated that there were many requests for the Mt Gox NFT. He said that they would start minting tomorrow. “How do we receive? Will it just go to our polygon wallet on Metamask once you have submitted?” asked one individual in response to Karpeles’ tweet.

“You’ll get an email at that time and there’s one more step to choose your privacy options such as hiding balances/etc,” Karpeles replied. Once you confirm, the process will enter minting status and your wallet will be in your hand within a few hours at most .”

Nike is facing a lawsuit from people who bought its NFTs

A group of people sued Nike this week over its decision to wind down its virtual show project RTFKT last year. The buyers of the digital assets accuse Nike of causing “the rug to be pulled out from under them,” and say they wouldn’t have bought its NFTs if they’d known they were “unregistered securities,” reports Reuters.

Filed in New York’s Eastern District, the proposed class action lawsuit seeks “unspecified damages of more than $5 million for alleged violations of New York, California, Florida and Oregon consumer protection laws.”

Nike tried to jump into the NFT game by buying RTFKT in 2021. But, like Starbucks Odyssey, it never quite worked out and the company abandoned the idea, announcing in December via the RTFKT X account that it planned to “wind down RTFKT operations” by the end of January this year.

Since then, RTFKT has seemingly been maintained by a single person named Samuel Cardillo, who spent Thursday posting through the sudden disappearance (and later reappearance) of artwork for its CloneX NFTs project.
