Jim Cramer is a host on Mad Money and has some tips for crypto investors. He said that “I wouldn’t discourage you from purchasing crypto” and added that he owns ethereum.
Jim Cramer’s Advice on Crypto Investing
Jim Cramer was the host of Mad Money and offered some tips on cryptocurrency investing during CNBC Make It Wednesday. Cramer, a former hedge fund manager, co-founded Thestreet.com which is a financial news and education website.
“I believe crypto should be part a person’s diversified portfolio,” said he, expounding:
I can’t tell anyone not to have crypto. I have crypto. I have ethereum.
He explained that he bought ether (ETH) because he wanted to buy a non-fungible token (NFT) for a charity. He noted that they wouldn’t allow him to do dollars. “I had to buy it in ethereum, so I researched it, and it’s got some qualities I like: scarcity value, not as hot — so to speak — as bitcoin (BTC). While acknowledging the fact that crypto is speculative he stated it was okay to invest in speculative investments. He stressed that crypto is speculative, but he said, “You have to admit it’s speculative,” and added: “Don’t place it in the Procter and Gamble class. It is not Coca-Cola. It’s not Apple .”
He further noted that ever since crypto came along, he has been recommending putting 5% of portfolios in crypto and 5% in gold, instead of putting 10% in gold.
While he acknowledged that he doesn’t know the exact value of crypto, he said that many people have made a fortune using it. He said that he had every right to attempt to make money with crypto.
I prefer that you do it in bitcoin or ethereum, as they have the most followers. But, I’m cautious.
Cramer also warned investors that they should not borrow money in order to purchase crypto. Cramer warned that crypto investors should not borrow money to buy it.
I would not discourage you from purchasing crypto due to all the fortunes made there and how it could make another group of people fortunes…I’d love that to happen to you.
