To discourage profiteering, Minecraft owner bans NFTs in-game

Minecraft developer Mojang Studios is taking a strong stance against NFTs.

“To ensure Minecraft users have a safe experience, blockchain technology is not allowed to be integrated into our client and server apps nor Minecraft game content like worlds, skins or other mods. “Blockchain technology can be used to create a rare digital asset to create a limited number of digital assets,” Mojang stated.

According to Mojang there may be Minecraft “collectible NFTs” or players could earn them by playing Minecraft or outside of the game.

Mojang argues these practices encourage digital scarcity and exclusion, which goes against the values of Minecraft. The studio stated that NFTs “are not inclusive of all our communities and create a situation of the haves/have-nots.” Mojang adds that NFTs are not inclusive of all our community and encourage profiteering.

I strongly recommend that you read this blog post in its entirety ,. It concisely and clearly lays out many critiques of NFTs, blockchain projects, in language that is easy to understand. There are many more quotes I could have added. )

Valve has taken also taken hard stance against blockchain games and NFTs on Steam, and much of the gaming community has soundly rejected NFTs, with Ubisoft stopped making NFTs for Ghost Recon Breakpoint just a few months after launching the initiative. Epic Games said last year it’s “open” to blockchain games on the Epic Games Store, and the first blockchain game came to the store in June.

While Mojang doesn’t completely shut the door on incorporating blockchain in the future, it concludes by saying that “we have no plans of implementing blockchain technology into Minecraft right now.”
