The excitement surrounding the Ethereum Merge is immense for PoS proponents as well as the community of the second largest cryptocurrency.

It also offers a lucrative opportunity for fraudsters who tried to profit even before the event.

  • Ethereum foundation had previously warned the community to be on high-alert for scams attempting to exploit users during this transition.
  • But that has not stopped these malicious entities from hacking the official Twitter handle of Go First airline, which was later changed to “vitalik.eth” in the early hours of September 14.
  • The display picture of the compromised account was also changed to show Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum co-founder.
  • The tweet following the security breach promoted a fake giveaway scam of $100,000 ETH.

seems like everybody impersonates @VitalikButerin, but you gotta love the blue check and prominent amplification.

To create a feeling of authenticity and fool investors, scammers are now looking at Twitter accounts with a verified mark. They then change into Buterin’s profile picture and description. So far, several profiles have suffered similar fates.
  • To identify fraudsters, you need to verify the Twitter username or handle of profiles that impersonate Buterin.
  • Inside of fake giveaways or airdrops that trick investors into accessing their crypto wallets, there could also be other scams such as phishing schemes and fraudulent ETH 2.0 tokens.
  • Staking is a new concept that many crypto-users may find attractive. However, it can be difficult to withdraw funds after they have been deposited.
